Welcome to the Ironbridge Railway Trust’s promotion of a Community Railway project to provide visitors to the famous World Heritage site with a sustainable transport solution.

Tourism, leisure and the unique quality of its heritage are at the very heart of the Ironbridge Gorge. Its economic status is of key importance locally, regionally and nationally. However, visitor access to the internationally renowned World Heritage site can be difficult and requires enhancement to match the high expectations of today’s visitors.

The redevelopment of the Ironbridge Power Station site presents a unique opportunity to reinstate the rail link between the power station site at Buildwas and the Ironbridge. The original station formed part of the Severn Valley Railway and is currently in use as a car park on the Broseley side of the River, only a short distance from the Bridge.

The potential for reinstating the rail link was recognised over ten years ago by a small group with experience in tourism, railways and architecture. This group formed the Ironbridge Railway Trust. The Trust has been busy developing proposals for the power station site and the reinstatement of the rail link into Ironbridge, which would bring benefit to both the community and the economy of the district, whilst recognising the sensitivity of the area and its community. The power station site lies at the end of the Ironbridge by-pass providing excellent road links to the M54. Developing the site to include a Park & Ride scheme would enable visitors to enjoy the World Heritage site, free of traffic and congestion.
